At Harmony Counseling, we match tools to your nervous system, not the other way around. Here are three approaches we commonly use—always by consent, always at your pace.
RTM (Reconsolidation of Traumatic Memories)
RTM is a neurological intervention—a set of guided meditations and imagery designed to uncouple traumatic memories from panic or fear. You’re not forced to relive the experience. Instead, we use structured visualization to help your brain store the memory differently so it no longer hijacks your system. Many people notice relief around nightmares, flashbacks, and triggers in just a few sessions.
Good for: intrusive symptoms related to past trauma or traumatic loss, when you want a gentle, non‑reliving approach.
Pacing: We build stabilization first (breath, grounding), then introduce RTM when you feel ready.
Somatic Work & Breathwork
Somatic work uses body‑based tools to regulate in real time. Think gentle movement, postural adjustments, grounding, and breath patterns like extended exhale or humming to stimulate your vagus nerve. These practices help your body shift from fight‑or‑flight toward steadier states, so you can think more clearly while you feel.
Good for: anxiety, shutdown, sleep issues, and moments that feel “all in the body.”
Pacing: Short segments, frequent check‑ins, eyes open if helpful.
Mindfulness (No Perfection Required)
Mindfulness is the practice of noticing—sensations, thoughts, emotions—without judgment. It creates space between what you feel and what you do, which is the foundation of choice. We keep it simple and compassionate: 60–120 seconds at a time, anchored by breath or touch, so it feels safe and doable.
Good for: overthinking, emotional waves, and building resilience over time.
Pacing: Micro‑practices first, then longer as capacity grows.
Choosing Your Path
We’ll co‑create a plan based on your goals, history, and current capacity. It’s common to blend these modalities across sessions.
