OOur bodies are made to move — and movement is one of the most powerful ways to regulate emotions. When you move, you don’t just release physical tension; you also help your brain and nervous system communicate more effectively.
Movement Balances the Brain
Cross-lateral movements (like marching in place, swimming, or gentle yoga flows that cross the midline) help integrate the left and right hemispheres of the brain. This balance supports emotional processing and helps the logical and emotional parts of your mind work together again.
Movement Activates the Vagus Nerve
Certain slow, rhythmic movements — like rocking, slow breathing with movement, or humming during stretching — stimulate the vagus nerve, which connects the brain to the heart, lungs, and gut. This activation helps your body shift out of fight-or-flight and back into a calm connection with yourself.
Healing Through Movement
At Harmony Counseling, we often use gentle, body-based practices alongside talk therapy to help clients regulate emotions. Whether it’s guided breathwork, mindful walking, or trauma-informed movement, these practices remind your body that it’s safe to release and recover.
